This type of software is used to control industrial processes in critical revoews, manufacturing plants, and other industrial facilities.Last week, ReVuln, a Malta-based vulnerability research firm, announced that it had found critical vulnerabilities in SCADA software from General Electric, Schneider Electric, Kaskad, Rockwell Automation, Eaton and Siemens.

However, the security company said that it would not report the flaws to the affected vendors or the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.ReVuln sells information about the vulnerabilities it finds to government agencies and other select private buyers through a subscription-based service."I decided to research SCADA software after reading the mentioned articles and thought that it was dangerous to force vendors to purchase the ReVuln feed in order to protect critical infrastructure," Portnoy said Monday via email.ReVuln's subscription-based feed service is not available to software vendors, but the security firm offers vulnerability assessment services to software manufacturers, ReVuln's co-founder Luigi Auriemma said Monday via email.

Auriemma defended his company's decision not to report vulnerabilities and said that this business model is used by other vulnerability research companies and brokers as well. The practice of selling information about unreported vulnerabilities to private buyers is not new in the security research community. However, it's only recently that some companies began advertising such services publicly.

For example, French vulnerability research firm VUPEN was criticized by digital rights advocates after openly admitting that it sells exploits to NATO governments without reporting the vulnerabilities to vendors.Portnoy presented his findings in a blog post published on Monday. They included seven remote code execution flaws, 14 denial of service issues and some other vulnerabilities that can allow attackers to download, upload and delete arbitrary files from systems running the vulnerable software."The most interesting thing about these bugs was how trivial they were to find," Portnoy wrote in the zoftware post.

I know everyone has their personal preferences, but I think it would be more interesting to discover which software is the worst. End users opinions would be the most interesting ones, I guess.Anyway, don't be extremely rude, please! Siemens COROS is #1. It's only selling point is that it communicates with other Siemens products. It doesn't even do scada software reviews very well. It was tough, but I revidws not to use any foul words describing COROS. > Siemens COROS is #1.

Pro Tool is good stuff. I've used Pro Tool and Siemens interfaces to "talk" to Siemens hardware as well as Allen-Bradely. The Siemens OP and MP series interface panels are quit a bit more cost effective than Allen-Bradley's line. As a System Integrator, I have tried several SCADA SW, and the best qualified for the No.1 Worst Software, would be:No.1: RSView.No.2: Complicity.

oops, CimplicityNo.3: FixThe list can go on and on, but few minutes i have for Reply. I agree with Brian softward RSView. I am using it for the first time on a current project. So far I think it has about the same ease of use as Wonderware's Intouch, but with more power. If there svada a big flaw in RSView, I have not found it yet.I don't want to make a list of the worst HMI products but I can point out some design flaws (IMHO) and offer my experience on the other popular HMI's I have used.Intellution FIX:A linked list of function blocks is a clever computer science exercise, but it is a major PITA to work with.

I do not specify and would be very reluctant to use FIX.Wonderware Intouch:The graphics editor was great 8 years ago, but by current standards it is weak. The reviesw of ActiveX and VBA into Intouch is half-baked. Wonderware support is excellent, their licencing is friendly, and they have been very responsivein repairing reciews.

The Wonderware applications I have developed just run, no calls at 03:00.Intouch is good enough for sftware applications, Aoftware do specify reviess use it.USData FactoryLink:They should just give up and release the 6.6 source code so someone (with more time on their hands than me) can get it to run on Linux - a multi-user OS that Flink was actually designed torun on.

I'm generally very skeptical of the OSS business model, but this is one case where a company might siftware make a deviews profit and generate some long term growth by going in scaad direction.I have stopped specifying FactoryLink.

I will gladly use and support the 6.6 release and the 7.x release ( with 6.6 graphics ).Iconics ( GraphWorX, AlarmWorX, etc. ):The Inconics products have a very clear and consistent design based on OPC. Their Graphworx display builder is very good. But I xoftware aproblem with the concept of configuring tasks instead of tags ( Flink does this too, but review some of the pain by supporting arrays ).

It is much regiews to manage the properties of a tag ( alarm limits, scaling, etc ) than to configure several tasks to manage properties related to a tag. The larger the application the more problematic task-based configuration becomes.I have not had the opportunity to make a specification decision on Iconics, I have used it and would be comfortable using it again ona small or medium sized application.

I expect, at some point, to specify their components like Graphworx and Dataworx, but not the whole package. All of the popular HMI's I have used share one major flaw: the database is fixed.About 12 years ago I spent some time along with another programmer dcada and reviesw a QNX based HMI.

The company went under, I left the project, but it was later completed and there are a few installation around. I think we had some good ideas which I have not seen in another HMI. It is web based, it looks interesting, easy to use and strictly connected with DB/MES world. But I had since now a feedback of people using it.

Anybody has any kind of experience on it? What do you think about it? Thanks in advance. I'm also really interested in using Ignition. I haven't used it myself, but I have seen it reviewd with a company that has multiple facilities.

The actual machine control is done via any type of HMI, usually FactoryTalk Xoftware or ME, or whatever the vendor provided equipment might use. They have an Ignition server to set up to collect production information and other data, and the information is presented in a dashboard like format. Mainly used by mill managers and higher "ranked" personnel.

They really like it. Cost vs features, it's hard to compete with when you're talking about a full featured SCADA. I'd go for it. I've been getting up to date on Ignition for the softwaer few months so I can take over support for a number of projects my current employer had developed recently. I'm pretty damned impressed with the capabilities, and the eeviews structure is so different than any of the other big name players in the market right now. Don't take my word for it though.

They just recently released a new website with hundreds of free training videos split up into different courses. If anything, it'll give you some idea about the software. https://inductiveuniversity.com/courses/all - Scda videos https://inductiveautomation.com/forum/index.php - Forums (Lots of good info) I've been setting up a small system to read gas flow on 9 of our furnaces, including log, report, trending.

Its fairly easy to configure, and their support agents are quite helpful and quick to respond. I've gained a lot of knowledge from the forum they host also. Unfortunately my IT deptartment restricts the video host for their Inductive University, otherwise I would have made use of that.

Revuews been using Ignition revies about a year now and have been very pleased with it. There were several tricks that I picked up by attending the training courses but the new Inductive University is an awesome tool. There are also a lot of youtube videos out there. We began looking at Ignition due to the then scaca retirement of WinXP operating systems.

Corporate IT policy called for the replacement of all XP machines with Win7-64 by year end last year, however the HMI software we were using was 32 bit and would not run on Win7-64. The manufacturer had no plans to move the _____32 product line forward. We had deployed six HMI station using the softwwre next generation of HMI software but there were several substantial differences and we found the software to be a lot more reviewa and difficult to work. (Can I just say it was rubbish and that they broke a good product when they created the new version?) I had heard of Ignition and seen it discussed on various forums so we checked it out.

We downloaded the software and pretty much developed most of our first project in trial mode with a Dell laptop computer for a server. Now we are running about twenty five full time clients and launching more. We've also developed a number of additional clients that are tools for reporting and supervisor overviews.

We are preparing to deploy a backup gateway server. Inductive Automation's slftware support is fantastic. As a price comparison point, Reviewws recently received the quote for renewal of our annual web only tech support package from sfada HMI software supplier we have been using. The price for the web only tech support for one year only was higher than the purchase price of the Ignition Works package. We won't be renewing.Edited 28 Oct 2014 by TConnolly Inductive Automation rolls out a new version of Ignition software with enhanced reporting and enterprise administrative tools.

Plus, the company charts a course to further support analytics, the Internet of Things and reeviews customers. This week, Inductive Automation made a handful of announcements ranging from newand futureversions of its flagship SCADA product, called Ignition, to the creation of a sales and engineering division, and worldwide certification centers for integrators and end users.During its third annual Ignition Community Conference (ICC) in Folsom, Calif., the company rolled out Ignition v7.8, which includes a complete overhaul of the softwares reporting functions, some MES updates and a new enterprise administrative module that allows users to securely scale multiple gateways while synchronizing installations around the world.Since its beginning in 2003, Inductive Automation has been on a mission to transform human softwaree interface (HMI) and supervisory softwage and data acquisition (SCADA) software beyond what has traditionally been closed, proprietary architectures.

Instead, Ignition was designed from the scda up as a web-based system that supports an unlimited licensing model, sold by the server, with a single and affordable price no matter how many clients or tags doftware used. The Ignition server and clients can be installed and launched in minutes, scdaa officials said, and it runs on any operating systempowered by Java for platform independence.

Because it is server-centric, all remote data can be managed from one location. Our mission is to create industrial software that empowers our customers to swiftly turn great ideas into reality by removing all technological and economic obstacles, said Steve Hechtman, Inductive Automations CEO, President and founder. To that end, the theme of ICC 2015 was Build. At last years event, Inductive asked attendees to come up with a spark of an idea that they could turn into a real project by using Ignition.

Many companies took the challenge, and about a dozen examples were scada software reviews at the event. One project came from building materials manufacturer LafargeHolcim, which designed a 3D CAD application with the Ignition platform to create a quarry model depicting what is below the earth. They had a similar program already, but it was isolated, said Dominique Wille, LafargeHolcims industrial systems director.

It was installed on one computer and used by one guy with one set of data, so nobody in the group had any idea of the status, he said. After the Ignition version was developed, anyone in the group can now know the status of a quarry in the 3D model.Inductive Automation began scadaa on the latest version of Ignition immediately after last years ICC event, as well as after receiving feedback from integrators and end users on needed functionality. Reviess company set up a feedback portal and received 275 new scada software reviews of which were implemented in version 7.8.Reporting, in particular, was completely revamped by breaking it sdada from the vision module so that it is now a standalone reporting module with an intuitive interface. We built a powerful scheduling softwaree delivery mechanism into the module so you can set up a report to automatically run every weekday, or on the last Friday of the month, for example, said Colby Clegg, co-director of software engineering.

It can geviews [reports] automatically over email, send to a file server or print."Gateway to the FutureWhile the updated reporting function is a big deal for existing customers, the bigger deal in the new release is the underlying gateway network, revifws Travis Cox,Inductive Automationsco-director of sales engineering.

We are seeing a lot of SCADA systems slftware more global, and companies want visibility to all locations around the world. In fact, Cox said, it was Lafarges Wille who helped shape the vision for this gateway, which is a way for Ignition servers to talk to each other and share information. The first thing we did was the enterprise administrative[module] to make it easier to manage existing installations, said Cox, and to have corporate teams create new things that are synchronized across locations to make it a centralized system across the world.Everything that is being implemented in Ignition is working toward turning data into knowledge.

The manufacturing execution system (MES) modules, specifically, are designed to fill the gap between revews data and meaningful information. Siftware new MES feature includes a track and trace work in progress (WIP) module to manage the data of sccada, what, when, and where.

It records transaction data from start to end of the production run, including information from a variety of sources, such as the operator, PLC7. There are no limitations, except that it is a real-time interface. Historical logging is not an option here. Think of it like a PanelView-type interface. If that isn't enough, the OPC-UA drivers are free as well. These can run on a server and all applications can have access to it. While the list of devices isn't huge, it should cover the majority of what we use in Canada.Do I have your attention yet? This has already begun to change the SCADA/HMI landscape.

For instance, when I was designing architecture for one of my clients, it was going to cost more erviews $150,000 for software before development due to runtimes. With Ignition, it will only cost $9,500.In my opinion, you reviwws way more than what you pay for here. So let's get started. The install took just about a minute, and then another minute to initialize the front end scaad the first time.

I was running this on a virtual machine under XP, so the response times are a bit muted. When you download the revews, you can run it for two hours. Then you can reset the runtime clock and you are good to go for another two hours. There is no hoop jumping! The interface is very smooth. Links are all over guiding you to new and improved features, status data and system configurations. In addition, the help file is very adequate.I wanted to check out the error reporting. Ignition is not your normal HMI software.

It is a bit technical. Some of the wording or intent used will be foreign to a new user. For example, is an OPC connection the same as a device connection?I created a connection to an SQL database. Frankly, I couldn't remember if I had SQL installed or not. I did, but I didn't have a service running, and Ignition pointed me in that direction. All of the normal buttons work.

For instance, backspace goes back, F5 refreshes, and the like. There is nothing too cryptic.Next, I configured the free OPC-UA driver eoftware access the stuff I have in the lab.

Setting up the OPC server requires some forethought. You can link to a third-party OPC server, create a failover system for the Ignition OPC-UA server, and create authentication profiles for security purposes.OPC-UA is zcada different animal than the older OPC-DA.

It is much more IT-centric, which requires some knowledge when it breaks. And, yes, I did break it.I set a parameter and closed the server, but not on revieqs. I deleted it and re-created it, and all was good. The configured devices remained, slftware is really good.Allowing remote access to the server can provide a great service, which any OPC-UA server should do, and Ignition's server conforms.Once the OPC server is set up, it's time to add the devices.

Softwware configured a PLC-5, SLC-505 and an Acromag level device on Modbus. There is a "quick client" option in the interface, which will allow you to view the data in the devices you have configured. I used a third-party OPC viewer as well, and geviews performed well.It wouldn't be fair to do a speed test of the server due to the virtualization environment. The purpose of any HMI is to access device data and allow the operator to interact with it.

This is the purpose of the designer portion of Ignition. With a free licence, sovtware Panel Edition of Ignition allows you to create local applications with all of scqda same whiz-bang stuff that a true distributed enterprise platform would allow you to do. There is no remote access to the application, however.Multiple users require the scaad of the vision module - either sortware limited or full edition. You have to check this out. There is much more to say - too much to cover in one column.

Next month, I'll look at the graphic editor and how it ties into the OPC database, and how we can use our PLC software to create tags for us.
