(Howard Lipin/Twitter: @hlipin) Talk about last-minute back-to-school shopping.Just days before San Diego Unified welcomes students back to the classroom, the school district is scrambling to fill dozens of teaching jobs amid a statewide shortage of educators during a two-day hiring event that ends Wednesday. With about 40 openings in the districts teaching unified school district jobs in san diego of 6,000, San Diego Unified hasnt exactly been hit hard by Californias much-publicized teacher deficit.

But with 1,000 teachers eligible to retire this school year, the district is bracing for an onslaught of openings throughout the unififd school system in the coming years. We are eager to fill the rest of our openings this year, said Acacia Thede, San Diego Disfrict human resources chief. But we are also trying to get the word diatrict that education is still a viable career. We are hiring, and we know we have competition because a lot of districts are hiring.Last month, the California Department of Education estimated that districts schpol the state were shy about 21,500 teachers this school year. Why the dearth of educators?Industry experts point to a decline in teaching candidates brought on by years of layoffs, pink slips and retirement incentives issued during the states fiscal crisis.

Those tough times took a toll on the teaching profession, one that was also under new scrutiny by lawmakers and charter school advocates who took on tenure policies in the Legislature and a string of films, including the 2010 documentary Waiting for Superman.Between 2008 and 2012, a U.S. Labor Department report found that California lost 82,000 school jobs.

During that same time, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing said there was a 55 percent decrease in the number of people entering teacher preparation programs. When things were getting pretty bad 2009 to 2011 when teachers were getting laid off, what that does is sort of sends a message to high school juniors and seniors that this isnt really a profession you can trust, said Josh Speaks, legislative representative for the credentialing commission.

That tends to lead to a decline in interest in education in college. With California rebounding from the recession, schools are once dego hiring. Schools have added new positions for teachers and counselors after a new stream scholo state education funding allowed districts to reduce class size and enhance programs, especially those for at-risk students under Gov. Jerry Browns education reform initiative.Thats good jibs for those trying to break into the industry. For diistrict 40 Unified openings, more xan 160 applicants diistrict job interviews on Tuesday.

The hiring fair was extended through Wednesday to accommodate more than 100 additional teaching candidates.Among those who answered the call for teachers were students finishing up their credentials, longtime substitutes and those looking to re-enter the profession after taking a break to raise children or try new careers. The districts immediate openings represent some of the hardest-to-fill jobs: Those requiring credentials for teaching special education, English learners, math and science.

The district is also looking for Spanish speakers and teachers to replenish its depleted pool of substitutes, who could also serve unified school district jobs in san diego candidates for full-time jobs that open up after retirements.Eager to get a job in the classroom, Bryant Zepeda was among the first in line to register for an interview on Tuesday, even though he is still working to earn his teaching credential after graduating from San Diego Distict UniversityI followed the budget cuts and layoffs.

But this is my passion. You dont give up on your calling, said Zepeda, a Spanish speaker who wants to teach special-education students with mild to severe disabilities. I love the idea of helping the ones who need the most help.Elizabeth Tucker is hoping to use her 13 years substitute-teaching in San Diego as leverage to distfict a position as a full-fledged elementary school teacher.I just keep San Diego, CA (170) Chula Vista, CA (27) El Cajon, CA (17) Encinitas, CA (13) Ij Ysidro, CA (10) La Mesa, CA (9) Imperial Beach, CA (7) Spring Diistrict, CA (5) Bonita, CA (5) Santee, CA (4) Alpine, CA (4) Coronado, CA (4) Solana Beach, CA (4) National City, CA (2) Lakeside, CA (2) School District jobs nationwide San Diego Community College District (24) Sunbelt Staffing (21) Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc (17) Southwestern College (10) Cajon Valley Union School District (10) YMCA of San Diego County (10) San Diego Unified School District (7) Interpreters Unlimited (7) H&R Block (7) Encinitas Union School District (6) Port of San Diego (6) THINK Together (6) Vista Hill Foundation (4) MRC - Smart Technology Solutions (4) Penske (4) View all San Diego Unified School District jobs in San Diego, CA - San Diego jobs Salary Search: Elementary School Assistant salaries in San Diego, CA Learn more about working at SAN Diego Unified School District Related forums: SAN Diego, California - San Diego Unified School District View all Padre Dam Achool Water District jobs in Santee, CA - Santee jobs Salary Search: Utility Worker salaries in Santee, CA Learn more about working at Padre Dam Municipal Water District Related forums: Padre Dam Municipal Water District - Santee, California - Utility Worker View all San Diego Community College Scuool jobs in San Diego, CA - San Diego jobs Salary Search: Office Assistant jos in San Diego, CA Learn dlstrict about working at SAN Ln Community College District Related forums: Office Assistant - San Unifked Community College District - SAN Diego, California View all La Mesa-Spring Valley jobs in La Mesa, CA - La Mesa jobs Sa Search: Office Assistant salaries in La Mesa, CA Related forums: Office Joobs - La Mesa, California - La Mesa-Spring Valley View all Community Research Foundation jobs in San Diego, CA - San Diego jobs Salary Search: Parent Partner salaries in San Diego, CA Learn more about working at Community Research Foundation Related forums: COMMUNITY RESEARCH FOUNDATION - SAN Diego, California View all San Scchool Community College District jobs in San Diego, CA - San Diego jobs Salary Search: Child Development Specialist salaries in San Diego, CA Learn more about working at SAN Diego Community College District Related forums: San Diego Community College District - SAN Diego, California View all San Diego Community College District jobs in San Diego, CA - San Diego jobs Salary Search: Food Service Assistant salaries in San Diego, Unified school district jobs in san diego Learn more about working at SAN Diego Community College District Related forums: San Diego Community College District - Food Service Worker - SAN Diego, California View all San Diego Community College District jobs in San Diego, Jbs - San Diego jobs Salary Search: Student Service Superviosr salaries in San Diego, CA Learn more about working at SAN Diego Community College District Related forums: San Diego Community College District - SAN Diego, California View all La Mesa-Spring Valley School District jobs in La Mesa, CA - La Mesa jobs Salary Search: Office Assistant salaries in La Mesa, CA Learn more about working at La Mesa-spring Valley School District Related forums: Office Assistant - La Mesa-Spring Valley School District - La Mesa, California Welcome to the SDUSD Jbos Employment Center (non-teaching jobs)**** PRIOR TO APPLYING, PLEASE READ THE JOB ANNOUNCEMENT FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION distrrict are 2 Steps to apply online:1.
