My less than 3 years old onkyo tx nr 808 has troubleshootnig sound from any input and network and firmware greyed out. Considering the cost of the receiver I expect more. Having searched the internet I believe this is a problem much recognised by the company. please contact me so i can have it repaired. Petter Solberg On 20.9.2014 - 5:28Hello! I have a Onkyo tx-nr808 Bouth it 05.12.11And today I was so happy to get the famous "NO SOUND" problemLive in norway and want to get it fix't!Is it a warranty center or something?Or do i have to pay for a new avr after 3 years ? Tony McLachlan On 2.5.2014 - 7:51Tx nr808.

Onkyo I just received this back from Genserve following your very kind offer to repair as a gesture of goodwill even although warranty had expired. A new HDMI board was fitted as I had the known issue with this part. Becky at Genserve has kept me up to date with the progress and I would like to thank Onkyo and Genserve. Brilliant customer service. I only wish other companies would learn that good service retains customers. Take note Thomson holidays!

My next amp will be another Onkyo. Let me know what a good upgrade you would suggest! Tony McLachlan On 31.3.2014 - 11:18Hi, looking for some help. Been a user of Onkyo amps for about 10 years now with no issues. My latest amp is the TX NR808 which I which is over 2 year old. It has developed the problem with the HDMI board. No sound and all the usual signs this is the fault.

I contacted Genserve who answered within minutes onkyo receiver troubleshooting no sound as it was not under warranty, referred me back to Onkyo and said Onkyo were usually quite good at helping customers out. Could you Help? The amp is central to our home system. Sean McGree On 26.2.2014 - 8:46Hi I have a tx-nr808 that has stopped producing sound, seems there is a common problem here?

Troubleshootlng just out of warranty as we'll! What is the issue and how much (if anything) is the fix?? Tiago Pinheiro On 7.2.2014 - 8:10Hello.I am also one of the victims of the 'hdmi board' problem, this time affecting a TX-NR 808, which shows the usual symptoms, no sound, speakers are not recognised, no network and no network or remote controller setup menus.I opened a ticket Ticket#2014020310000384 on monday, 3rd Feb, but so far I didn't receive any reply whatsoever.

I got Onkyo receiver troubleshooting no sound someone from Onkyo Europe have a look? Thanks. Hans Poelen On 4.2.2014 - 11:28I'm a Onkyo fan since 1991, bought a second hand integra stereo receiver and bought in 2000 a new 599 guilder receiver (505). In about 2011 I thought it was time to upgrade, so i've bought the TX-NR808. What a difference, briljant receiver. 6 months later, had to take it to customerservice and get it repaired.

No response anymore from the remote control and random switching of the inputs by itself. After waiting 6 weeks to get it back, the receiver worked but i have to stand maximum 75 centimeters from the receiver to get tKnow Onkyo "no sound" fix (for dummies)WARNING if you do this there will be no warranty from onkyo or anybody else, so this is at your own risk.I know this is an issue with the model recever had the TX-NR807 and some other Onkyo's but sometimes there is need for cap replacements.

More on that is to be found on google. Hello,Well, I got home from work today and my receiver was screwed up. We had some thunderstorms in Kentucky this morning and I assume I had a power surge of some type. When I powered the unit up it would pass a video signal and I was getting a picture but, I couldn't get sound on any source. I tried power cycling all my equipment and still no good. I tried switching inputs and still didn't work.I did a quick google search and trouhleshooting appears that this is a known bug with these onkyo receivers.

There was page after page about this problem. This is my fourth onkyo unit and receivfr the most part they have been good units. I did have my display screen go out on my onkyo receiver troubleshooting no sound unit and now my current unit has developed a problem with the sound dropping out today.

This is the first time it has happened and I wasn't getting sound out of any of the seven channels or subwoofer. After reading many threads, one common theme presented itself. There is a problem with the HDMI board. More specifically a problem with the DTS chip loacated on the HDMI board. I don't know why onkyo designed the unit this way but, the trokbleshooting for the amp section is passed through this DTS chip.

If the chip is malfuntioning, you don't get power to the amps and thus no sound. If you have this problem, receiverr will notice that the speaker icons that you usually see in the top left corner of the display are gone.

Another sign when bo up is that you don't hear that second click of the power relay feeding the amp section. Whenever you power on an onkyo unit, you usually hear two distinct clicks. I was only hearing one.I was reading and trying to figure out a way to solve this problem and came across a few threads about applying heat to the DTS chip.

Some people said to use a halogen bulb. Another said to use a hair dryer. One thread even went as far as to recommend putting the whole unit in the oven on low heat. (seriously.) This seemed counter productive to me as we all know that heat is the enemy of all electronics. Manufacturers go to great lengths to dissipate and remove heat from the inside of these units with heat sinks and fans. Why would adding more heat to the unit manage to solve anything?I also watched a few youtube videos claiming to fix onkyo units with the methods described above.

Only two of them worked. One guy put a halogen bulb directly over the DTS chip for about 40 seconds and power was restored to the amps.Another guy used a hair dryer aimlessly on the whole HDMI board and after three long and boring attempts, it started working again.I decided that the hair dryer was the method that had the least amount of risk involved and I decided to give it a try but, instead of blowing hot air all over the place I would just concentrate on the DTS chip.I located the DTS chip on the right rear of the HDMI board and concentrated the heat in this area.

I wound high heat and low fan speed. I kept using the hair dryer on the chip for about 90 seconds total.HOLY SHIT IT WORKED!! I couldn't believe it. I am now getting sound back on all channels again. It has been working for about three hours now. I know this isn't a permanent fix but, at least I can watch TV tonight. Other owners of this unit mentioned that onkyo will replace the whole HDMI board if you send your unit in. I am going to have to check to see if they will still do this on out of warranty units because mine is past it's prime.

I am also going to see if I can purchase just the HDMI board and replace it myself. I will update this thread at a later date with my findings. I just wanted to document this on the forum for others to see because I'm sure someone will have this problem in the future.Andy Onkyo AV receivers seem to be troublesome based on the numerous internet and youtube postings.

I've seen the halogen bulb trick. I will have to try a hair dryer on my totally dead TX-SR805. Their is a YT vid of deceiver where the owner stuck his hand inside the unit, pressed on a component to restore standby power and then powered on the amp. No such stupid luck for me. My power supply board is good. The transformer is getting voltage and there are no open windings. What is left is the main processor which is preventing the standby power relay from engaging.

What a pretty door stop. Glad you got it working again, but as kind of mentioned above, it is never a good sign when you can immediately find a wealth of information for a specific problem involving specific brands/models with a simple google search. Helpful yes, but in making my next purchase, I would have to take that into consideration-kind of like recall issues on cars. Baselworld is only a few weeks away. Troubleshoofing been solid up until receover other day, I get no sound at all from the main amp. The video looks fine, all of my sources are displayed though the receiver's HDMI output, but no sound from any source. For a test, I turned on Zone 2 that power my outdoor speakers, and that was working fine, so it seems the problem may be with the main amp.I've since performed a factory reset, and it appears to be worse since doing this.

The network and firmware options are grayed out in the settings menu, and there is no network connectivity.

I have no sound in Zone2 reciever more. I also tried to enable HDMI audio out so I could at least hear the speakers in my TV for the time being, but this doesn't seem to work either. Is this receiver fried? I can't reload the firmware since that option is now grayed out (why is it grayed out?). Does it sound like souns of a mother/logic board issue, or something else?

There's a service center about 25 miles away from me that I'm probably going to take it to, but I have no idea what to expect and wonder if it oknyo be even worth having it repaired.

Any ideas before I go this route?Any help is appreciated. Thanks.edit: clarification I just experienced the same problem with my TX-NR808. I emailed ONKYO Parts & Service and they extended a one-time warranty repair at my local authorized service center. It ended up that a chip needed to be 'reflowed'.which I imagine meant that the connection was broken and they had to solder or replace. I may have this wrong, but I was told the repair was 'reflowed !C-3001'.These units run very hot.so for me.maybe my ventilation was not adequate rexeiver the heating/cooling took its toll on the chip??

Maybe one of the techies on this forum knows more about this issue. I just had the exact same problem yesterday. I have no audio, not even a hum. Network, remote setup and maybe some other options are grayed out. You say Onkyo covered the repair out of warranty; that would be great.Did you e-mail Onkyo from their web site? Who did you contact and what did you say?I would greatly appreciate any advice/guidance. Yes, Onkyo covered it out of warranty.

Check out this thread for details:https://www.avsforum.com/t/1262803/the-official-tx-nr708-owners-thread/1560#post_22999362Basically, I emailed parts at us.onkyo.com and told them my situation, that there were numerous failures all over the net describing the exact same problem, and if there was anything they could do for me, even if my amp was out of warranty.

They requested a receipt of purchase, then set me up with a local service center that replaced the faulty board at no cost to me.

It onkgo a few weeks to get the amp back, but since has been working great. Give that email address a shot, hopefully they'll work with you like they worked with me.I hate knowing there has been such trohbleshooting failure for thiHiSense 55M3300 - BenQ W2000 - Sapphire 92" Screen - SkyQ - Mede8er MED 600X - Maratntz SR6010 - Rotel RMB1075 - Jamo D500 - BK P12 300SB DF - Xbox One S - Sony BDP-S6700 - Pro-ject Debut CarbonXBL - Armoured TigerMedicinema - Feel better with film HiSense 55M3300 - BenQ W2000 - Sapphire 92" Screen - SkyQ - Mede8er MED 600X - Maratntz SR6010 - Rotel RMB1075 - Jamo D500 - BK P12 300SB DF - Xbox One S - Sony BDP-S6700 - Pro-ject Debut CarbonXBL - Armoured TigerMedicinema - Feel better with film Mine has just started doing the same.

It will work for a few minutes or even hours if i remove the power and then re-apply it. All of a sudden the sound goes off. No clicks or anything, just silence. Also noticed it sometimes doesn't switch audio inputs. As in if i select VCR it says VCR on the front but is playing audio from the previous source.I have done a hard reset, with no luck. The fault still happens. I try to update the firmware after the reset, but it says no update, so i presume the firmware stays when i hard reset?Let me know what Onkyo say please. Exact same problem here.

I have a tech guy helping with my home automation. As soon as we updated all of my components including the Onkyo TX-NR807 I was having sound issues. I had no sound issues with my home theatre for the past 2 years. We did the power source trick a couple times, but that is ridiculous to say the least and temporary.

My video feed still works, bit what the hell good is that without audio???I believe this to be an Onkyo software update issue as seems to be a frequent cause of disruption in component operation among many threads and many Onkyo models.

this is a phenomenal unit, but this glitch needs to be addresses ASAP by Onkyo. I am not happy about having to unhook my receiver and tote it down to the Best Buy only to have it shipped for warranty service to Onkyo.

Please tell me there is a solution out there. My tech wizard is out of ideas too. Apparently Onkyo is aware of the problem, but you have to send in your receiver for service.they are even offering a one time reciver outside of your warranty period. Sounds like they really buggerred something up troubeshooting the firmware update but they aren't quite ballsy enough to actually come out and say that.

Glad I kept the box! Hi! Glad I read this post. Same issue. Called Onkyo and they are indeed going to fix it for free, out of warranty. I've had several Onkyo products and never an issue, so I will give them a break and also give them a thumbs up for owning up to it and fixing for free.A lot of companies toubleshooting not do troublesholting, even if its a known issue or flaw on their part. Onkyo was, in fact, the first audio equipment maker to supply receivers that could handle video and audio in HD. Onkyo has been around since the 1940s and originally sold turntable pickups. Problems with Onkyo receivers can include the device not turning on, no sound, low volume levels, and problems with settings. These jo of issues can be identified and rectified. Step 1Plug the receiver into the wall if the power won't come on.

Lights on the front of the unit indicate proper power supply. Check that the wall outlet is functioning if the Onkyo still won't turn on. Plug something else in to the same outlet and see if it works.

Step 2Check that sources are connected and turned on if there's no sound. Onkyo receivers include an amplifier and broadcast radio receiver, so you can isolate the receiver by setting "Source" to "FM Radio" and try listening for noise. If you can't hear anything when tuning for stations, it's possible the problem is with the speaker connections; check them.

If you hear noise, the problem is with the source, like a DVD player; check for power supplied and connections. Step 3Check the settings on the Onkyo receiver if audio or video doesn't appear on a television that you've connected with a HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable. Look for a "Monitor Out" setting and choose "HDMI." Step 4Reset the Onkyo if you continue to nokyo trouble.

Hold the "VCR/DVD" button while pressing the "On/Standby" button, and the receiver should enter "Standby." Turn it on again by pressing the "On/Standby" button.

Bear in mind that this will clear all the presets and other settings - but it may be those settings that are causing the problems.
